The complex used in the current study was the Tocomin branded blend supplied by Carotech, which contains D-α-tocotrienol (12–14%), D-β-tocotrienol (1%), D-γ -tocotrienol (18–20%), D-δ-tocotrienol (4–6%), and D-α-tocopherol (12–14%).

Tramp model

Around 40 mice were used in the study, divided into three treatment groups and two control groups. The researchers chose to use the transgenic adenocarcinoma mouse prostate (TRAMP) mouse model because of its close resemblance to the various stages of human prostate cancer.

All animals followed the same diet, but the three treatment groups also received 0.1, 0.3, or 1 percent mixed tocotrienols designed to deliver dosages of around 1.7, 5.2, and 17.1 mg, respectively, of D-γ -tocotrienol/day. The tocotrienol diet was followed for 24 weeks.

Mice were all eight weeks old at the start of the study. Regular weight checks and health monitoring throughout the study period found all animals to be in a good health condition with no significant change observed in body weights among mice fed the Tocomin diet or the normal diet.

Fewer tumors

The researchers report that after their study period, mice in the Tocomin-supplemented group had a significantly lower occurrence of prostate tumors compared to the control.

Tests revealed that 38, 33 and 22 percent of mice in the 0.1, 0.3 and 1 percent Tocomin-diet groups respectively developed palpable tumors. This compared to 73 percent in the control group mice.

In addition, mixed tocotrienols were found to suppress the progression of high-grade prostatic neoplastic lesions to fully developed tumors by modulating the cell cycle and affecting the expression of proapoptotic proteins.

The researchers concluded that their findings “further support the potential use of tocotrienols as prostate cancer chemopreventive agents in humans.”

Please contact our office for your supplement needs remember not all supplements are created equally and if you buy a poor quality supplement you will not get the benifits you are seeking.Health is not something to gamble with.

Source: Mixed Tocotrienols Inhibit Prostate Carcinogenesis in TRAMP Mice
Nutrition and Cancer, 62: 6, 789 — 794
DOI: 10.1080/01635581003605896
Authors: Barve, Avantika , Khor, Tin Oo , Reuhl, Kenneth , Reddy, Bandaru , Newmark, Harold and Kong, Ah-Ng

News about Monster Energy Drinks

Energy Drinks Are Risky Behavior in a Can

Marketers would have us believe that superpowers can be had by popping the top and guzzling a colorful can of "energy" with names like

Red Bull, Vitamin Water, Monster Energy and Guru.

However, while energy drinks flowed fairly easily from gyms to the club scene to the mainstream, new research has linked them to health risks. This is truly ironic given how the beverages are sold to the health-seeking set.

Nancy Appleton, PhD, a nutritional consultant based in La Jolla, California, and author of Stopping Inflammation (Square One), was asked whether or not there is any basis at all for claims that these drinks have positive attributes. In a word, she said "no,".

There's nothing to be gained by turning to artificial, chemical-laden products that are, in fact, actually harmful.

Dr. Appleton says the caffeine content of many energy drinks is uncomfortably high.

According to a report in the Journal of Analytical Toxicology, energy drinks contain as much as 141 milligrams (mg) of caffeine per serving, often more than an eight-ounce cup of coffee (about 83 mg to 135 mg -- and coffee also contains natural co-factors that counteract some of the stimulating effect of caffeine).

Energy drinks also exceed the .02% caffeine content generally recognized as safe by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in its guidelines for colas.

In comparison, a 12-ounce Coca-Cola Classic contains 34.5 mg of caffeine... Pepsi contains 38 mg... and Tab has 46.5 mg. And, with energy drinks, as with colas and cups of coffee, many people don't stop with one.

RESEARCH PINPOINTS RISKS

In addition to excess amounts of caffeine, research conducted at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit and presented at the American Heart Association's annual conference in 2007 found a link between consumption of energy drinks and elevated blood pressure and heart rate.

After abstaining from all caffeine for two days, healthy young adults drank two energy drinks, each containing 80 milligrams of caffeine and 1,000 milligrams of taurine, an amino acid thought to boost alertness that is found in protein foods like meat and fish.

Having taken baseline measurements before energy drink consumption, researchers measured blood pressure, heart rate and did an EKG following the drink -- at 30 minutes, an hour, two, three and four hours later. For the next five days, subjects consumed two energy drinks a day. On the seventh day researchers followed the same procedures as on the first day -- baseline measures for days one and seven were compared. After energy drink consumption, heart rates increased five to seven beats per minute, and systolic blood pressure increased by 10 mmHg. Though not raised to a degree that would be dangerous in healthy adults, researchers noted that this effect could be detrimental in people with health problems, including some who aren't aware of their increased risk.

Manufacturers of energy drinks are shrewdly pursuing the often sleep-deprived young adult marketplace. However, even though this group is considered relatively healthy and fit, they need to beware of health risks associated with excessive use of these products...

Exercise and sports

Caffeine is a diuretic, meaning it promotes the production of urine by the kidneys. Severe dehydration may result when you combine the effect of the caffeine in the drinks with the natural fluid loss that occurs with exercise and sweating. Because of this risk, the American College of Sports Medicine discourages high school athletes from drinking these stimulant-containing energy or sports drinks.
Energy drinks and alcohol. Some recent entries in the energy drink market contain alcohol. But whether purchased as an all-in-one product or with alcohol added separately, it's important to note that there are particular dangers to imbibing spiked energy drinks since they contain both stimulants and a depressant (the alcohol).

The stimulants mask the fatigue that normally serves to signal that you've had too much to drink and it's time to quit. They may also reduce perceived impairment, and lead inexperienced kids (adults too, for that matter) to believe that they are more sober than they actually are. That can lead to poor judgment... and sometimes serious accidents. The fact that these substances are combined can also affect how they are metabolized, leading to the potential for serious medical problems when done in excess, and/or by people who are vulnerable, including those on prescription or OTC medications.

Posing as "Natural."

To appeal to health-conscious consumers, many marketers pump their drinks full of vitamins, amino acids or herbs (such as carnitine, guarana, ginseng, bitter orange), and then slap a "natural" label on the bottles. Don't be duped by this ruse, since there's nothing wholesome about these beverages and anything "natural" added to them is in amounts too tiny to have any benefit whatsoever.

Bloated with sugar and calories. Like soft drinks, energy drinks can make you fat. Dr. Appleton warns that they are loaded with sugar -- equivalent to three or more teaspoons per can or bottle -- and empty calories. They might seem less "bad for you" than sodas... for example, one serving of green tea flavored Vitamin Water contains 50 calories and 13 grams of sugar, while one 12-ounce Coca Cola Classic has 140 calories and 39 grams of sugar. But a more careful reading of the Vitamin Water label reveals that one serving consists of eight ounces and the beverage comes in 20-ounce bottles... so a bottle contains 125 calories and 32.5 grams of sugar. Additionally energy drinks are often made from fructose -- crystalline fructose or high fructose corn syrup. Some experts believe these sweeteners are damaging and may do more harm to your liver and endocrine system than table sugar or glucose.

What is the best sports energy drink?

A cool, clear, clean glass of water. It comes in several types, generally categorized as white, purple or green varieties. Asparagus is related to the lily family and a cousin to onion and garlic. Asparagus is one vegetable that still needs to harvested by hand, hence the cost being higher than most other vegetables. The color of the asparagus is determined by the amount of exposure to sunlight. Green asparagus is traditionally the most common variety we see in our local stores, while purple or white asparagus is available on a limited basis in specialty markets. White asparagus is the type that is most popular in Northern Europe. The white variety has less flavor then the green or purple. The purple variety is generally harvested when the stalks reach a height of approximately 3 inches. Once cooked purple asparagus provides a distinctive fruity flavor. Try it for some variety in your dinner, it is loaded with phytonutrients.

Uses:

Asparagus can be boiled, steamed, sautéed, grilled, pickled, or served cold. It makes an enjoyable appetizer, or a good complement to salads, vegetable dishes, and soups. Asparagus can also be pureed and used for soups and soufflés.

At Their Best:

Asparagus is best when in season in your area, which in our begins in April and runs through June.

Asparagus is harvested throughout the year some where in the world, making it available year round. It is best when eaten within a couple of days of harvesting so if purchasing in the off season prepare it as soon as purchased to maintain the flavor. When it is in season in your local area prepare it within 1-3 days from purchase date, for the best taste.

Purchasing Asparagus

Select asparagus with stalks that are firm, crisp, with full heads and tightly closed without any discolored tops. Check the aroma of the asparagus it should not give off an fowl odor. The ends of the asparagus that have been cut should be moist and fresh in appearance, not dried or cracked. When dried or cracked you may be purchasing old asparagus.

Storage;

Asparagus perishes easily. Fresh asparagus will last about 3 to 4 days while blanched asparagus can last for 9 months in the freezer. Do not wash asparagus before storing. Wash it just before using. To store fresh asparagus, wrap the stalks in a damp cloth or paper towel and place in a plastic bag that is not airtight. Airtight bags will trap moisture, causing the asparagus to become soggy and it begins to rot. Fresh asparagus can be stored by trimming an inch off the stem end, wrapping ends with a wet paper towel, then stand the spears upright in a glass container filled with a couple of inches of water. Place a loose plastic bag over the spear tips and store in the refrigerator.

Preparation is key to good tasting Asparagus.

Asparagus is one of the more underrated, as well as misunderstood, vegetables. Many people say they don't like it, myself included. Most often it is served over-cooked which makes it mushy, slimy and tasteless. This is how I recall asparagus tasting as a child. It was even worse when we ate it from a can,it was defiantly over cooked. I had a few opportunities in my life to have it prepared properly. I now enjoy it a great deal, as does my family. The bottom line is most people don't know how to purchase it, store it or prepare it.

Asparagus used as medicine: It has been used since early times as both a vegetable and a medicine. Asparagus has a long history of medicinal help for liver, kidney and heart disorders. It has been known to aid patients who suffer from kidney stones. It also has anti-inflammatory benefit which is great for those who suffer from arthritis. It works to detoxify the liver as well.

We can eat ourselves sick now lets try a new road and started a road to wellness through eating healthier. Juicing asparagus is a great way to get alot of detox and flood your body with rich nutrients. Remember organic is best!

Asparagus is low in calories, contains no cholesterol and is very low in sodium. And it's loaded with nutrients; a great source of the B vitamins (B1, B2, B3, and B6), high in calcium, magnesium and zinc, and a very good source of dietary fiber and protein along with other vitamins (A,C, E and K) and minerals (iron, phosphorus, potassium, copper, and selenium).

High Antioxidants benefits, like spinach and turnip greens. As well as a great source of folate and potassium. Research suggests folate is key in taming homocysteine, a substance implicated in heart disease. Several studies indicate that getting plenty of potassium may reduce the loss of calcium from the body. Green asparagus is an especially good source of vitamin C. Vitamin C helps the body produce and maintain collagen, the major structural protein component of the body's connective tissues.

Folate is a great anti cancer supplement beware avoid folic acid as a supplement, it may create some cancers. Look for future posts on folic acid and cancer.

COOKING ASPARAGUS: Asparagus should be cooked: "fast." Cooking time will vary depending on the thickness and age of the asparagus. Fresh asparagus requires less cooking. The asparagus should be cooked for only 2 to 6 minutes, just to a point where it's tender inside yet still crispy on the outside. Steaming will retain the most nutrients. It takes only a few minutes for those stalks to turn a bright green, showing that they are ready. You can also grill, sauté or roast asparagus. Any of those methods will bring out a unique sweet nutty flavor.

Check out a few websites on preparing asparagus before you cook it again. You can grill, saute, steam, roast or even make it in the oven. remember keep it simple and quick 2-6 min is the maximum cook time for perfect asparagus.

Day Care and Probiotics

Are your children in daycare?

A success story about children I've treated who suffer from frequent illnesses brought on from daycare interactions. Over the years I've treated several families whose children attend daycare. The most common link I noted with children in daycare is they have a rise in common infections, earaches, colds and respiratory like conditions. These children have presented to the office sick. They had been treated previously by the family physician with multiple doses of antibiotics. These children seemed to have frequent illnesses. Symptoms ranging from colds, viruses, earaches, respiratory infections and other common, children ailments.
After a consultation with parent and child I then created a plan for wellness.

Treatment starts with diet changes, cutting out sugars and junk snack foods, cut out most dairy products. Add more fruits and vegetables. Some children may need special testing for food allergies and nutritional testings.
Primary treatment is having a spinal adjustments to the child's health care protocols.

Please check out my two favorite website for children and chiropractic.
icpa4kids.com
International Chiropractic Pediatric Association
www.NVIC.org
www.VaccineAwaking.blogspot.com

Watching Day Care Children At Play

When you watch children of daycare age play, they stuff everything into there mouths toys and hands. Hands are always in there mouths, ears and noses. They are great at sharing germs with each other, they have not yet learned how to sneeze into there elbows, they sneeze all over each other. What can we do beyond washing hands and toys more frequently? We can add Probiotics to there diets.

A recent study shows the benefits of Probiotics.Do not be fooled by the yogurts on the market with added probiotics. First of all, yogurt all has probiotics so don't be fooled with labels. The amount of sugars in yogurt out ways the good benefits of most yogurt.

If you use yogurt as a source of probiotic choose plain yogurt, without any sugar or artificial sweeteners added. I suggest to patients to use plain non-flavored yogurt with fresh fruit or non sweetened frozen fruits.

Probiotic in the News

Probiotics are gaining interest for reducing the risk of upper respiratory tract infections such as the common cold. Some research suggests that milk fortified with a specific strain of probiotic, Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG (Culturelle) seems to modestly reduce the incidence of respiratory infections in young children in day care.8565 Lactobacillus GG seems to stimulate some measures of immune function.7756,7757 Some clinical research also shows that children attending day care who drink a milk product containing a specific combination of Lactobacillus acidophilus plus Bifidobacteria animalis (HOWARU Protect, Danisco) for 6 months have a 45% lower risk of developing flu-like symptoms compared to placebo.

As a preventative measure you can add Lactobacillus rhamnosus into a beverage and give it to your children daily. I like a combo probiotic to get general coverage for multiple issues.
My goal with treatment is to support children's immune system through diet, nutritional support and spinal correction for immune systems.

Start before the school year begins by having the children immune system boosted before the school starts. Give there immune system a boost starting in the summer.fore school starts.Remember your children's spines need to adjusted regularly as well as your own.

Please call if you have any questions or if you have a child who suffers from frequent illnesses.

Fun Facts

Asthma Suffers did you Know?

Fact # 1
Asthmatics who supplemented magnesium demonstrated significant improvements in their asthma symptoms and in their quality of life. Pain, soreness? How does a bag cause joint pain, neck pain or back pain?

Are you getting more headaches than you have in the past?

Lets look at your purse.

Most woman with large bags can fill them to the top. Ask her," What is in the bag, are these items she can not do without! Most of these things we can live without for the few hours till we return home.

Lugging around these heavy bags ,typically weighing 10-16 pounds or more - can often be the primary cause of your upper back problems.

The pain is not always present while you are carrying the bag. This makes your pain a mystery with no known cause or correlation to your symptoms. The pain can show up as later even a day alter.

Men you are not out of the woods either !

Gentlemen you to have issues carrying your large wallets in your rear pocket.
The days of the big fat leather wallets, loaded with plastic sheathed photos of family and credit cards need to come to a end.

Lighten your wallet and decrease your sciatica symptoms. If you want pictures of the kids and wife put them in your phone your are more likely to view them more frequently then when in your wallet.

Carrying a wallet in your back pocket can cause low back pain, leg pain and hip pains.

Make changes

Start by changing what is in the wallet-cut out picture and down load them
onto your phone.

Take out unnecessary credit card

Avoid the speciality card and keep them on a key ring

Carry you wallet in your front pocket to avoid the low back pain. This may prevent a pickpocket from picking your wallet.

A great idea is to totally give up a wallet and us a money clip.

The American Chiropractic Association recommends that handbags weigh no more than 10 percent of the owner's body weight, but doctors point out that the rule was made assuming the weight would carried distributed evenly across your back, like when wearing a backpack. When the bag weighs more than 10% it can begin to cause a serious injury compressing on the nerves coming from the neck area.
A common purse load can weigh -- roughly the equivalent weight of two newborns.

If you weigh 150 lbs then your bag should not weigh more than 7.5 lbs. and this should be carried equally on each side 3.25 lbs per shoulder

Wearing a strap over one shoulder should generally weigh less than 10 percent of your body weight to avoid injury. Remember to switch the sides you're carrying it on often, and walk using correct posture.Keeping your head and shoulders aligned and upright.

Remember to switch the side you're carrying your purse on often, and walk with correct posture, keeping your head and shoulders aligned and upright.

Women if you are carrying around a fashionable heavy handbag you could be setting yourself up for a unintended destination of neck and shoulder pains.

What Happens?

Carrying a heavy load on one side of your body every day can lead to compression through the spine, when carrying a bag for more than three minutes, it cause a lengthening of tissues, a phenomenon known as tissue creep.

This can restrict and compress the spinal joints, which then leads to numbness and tingling in the hands, lengthening and imbalance in the muscles in the shoulder and back, headaches, arm pain, shoulder pain. This is what leads to the pain we later feel.

Another problem is when a woman is wearing high heels while carrying a heavy bag. This can cause back pain into the mix by shifting the load further forward and moving the neck compression down into the lumbar spine. Check not just your bag, but also your shoes!

The best way to carry a heavy load is in a back pack be sure to use both straps and carry the load over both shoulders equally.

The two-shouldered bag is not likely to spark a new fashion trend. It will prevent injury that can become chronic... You choose fashion or chronic pain issues!

Avoid the trap of the vanity issues and put your spine in first place above vanity.

The ideal purse- is one with a wide strap that keeps the load close to your body.

The best choice is a back pack, 2ND best is your messengers bag that is worn over the shoulder. Straps that are worn over the shoulder help keep the weight close to the body and disperse the load more equally.

How to Buy a New Purse

• Purchase a purse with short, wide straps- this keeps the load close to your
body
. Straps that run across the body/ chest are ideal for distributing the load.
• Clean out your purse regularly to keep the load light.
• Set your purse down whenever you get the chance.
• If you must do carry a heavy bag, such as a computer bag, switch
shoulders often.
• Consider dividing your heavy load between two bags.

***My best advice is that if you must carry everything for everyone take your last or a old purse. Purchase a small ideal bag with wide straps and put only in it what you need. Be sure the small bag has only the necessary things. In the older larger bag put everything else and store this bag in the trunk of your car. This way you will never feel like you are without all the stuff you will need someday. Remember you can also store stuff in the glove box.

Lets start lightening up your bags and see if you don't see less neck and low back pain.

Please note if your symptoms persists then give our office a call and we can discuss correction for your pain issues.

Seeds What You Need to Know

Did you know the seed industry changed drastically in recent years?

About 7 million people had backyard gardens and became food growers last year.

Seeds are where our gardens develop from, then they grow into our food which
eventually ends up on our kitchen table.

Did you know that in 1980 a Supreme Court ruling was made that approved patents on life forms by genetic coding. This means seeds are legally traded and owned as commodities.

Three decades later, three multinationals, Monsanto, DuPont, and Syngenta, control 47 percent of the first link in the food chain, and 10 companies own 67 percent.

Why Care? Who Cares? You should!

“Transgenic technologies”, these are modifications happening to our food sources through changing the natural seeds. This can include breeding plants to produce pharmaceuticals, other crops are produced to resist pesticides and herbicides.

Since we allowed patenting of plant genetics, seeds have become a attractive investment- a new source to capitalize on.

Seed saving is how seeds were stored for thousands of years. Now we are seeing restrictions being placed on seeds by these few companies and we may be looking at becoming a hostage, our food supply is now at the hands of these few monopoly companies. These companies will control what is planted and how much is planted in the future.

Do you want these adulterated food sources?

This has the risk of causing genetic diversity to be lost. Now run by monopoly corporations diversity will shrink, seed conservation efforts will dwindle, we will loose genetic diversity all through these processes.

What can we do?

Start by knowing what goes on with your food. Ask questions where you purchase your foods from, ask the garden center the source of the seeds.
Seek out companies who sell organic seeds, support organic companies, eat organic as much as possible for your health.

I like "Seeds of Changes" order a catalog at 1-888-762-73333 or www.seedsof change.com

Learn more >> Visit the Organic Seed Alliance (seedalliance.org) and Seed Savers Exchange (seedsavers.org) to learn how to save seeds and to monitor corporate and congressional action.

We are creating our children's futures. Dr. Murphy is a leader in chiropractic research. I found a synopsis of some of the most recent medical journal articles that Dr.Murphy pulled together, this is information we should all be made aware of. The sad thing is that this is published information, but it is not reaching you -- the general public.

When you read this article know that the Italic statements are from the journals themselves, what is in " " bold and quotes are my thoughts in response to the research
articles.

Spinal stiffness was linked to visceral pathology with nearly 100% accuracy based upon sympathetic innervation.
(Medical Times, 1921)

Visceral =organ Pathology = Disease

1,000 capsules of Tylenol in a lifetime doubles the risk of end stage renal disease. (New England Journal of Medicine, 1994)

That almost sounds like it should be written on the label of all the Tylenol bottles.Looks Like a serious warning should have been sent out for all of us to know this!

The average time for a whiplash-injured patient to achieve maximum improvement is 7 months 1 week. (Spine, 1994)W

Why do we blow off a "Whiplash" This is a life altering injury, read on for more whiplash information.

93% of patients with chronic whiplash pain who have failed medical and physical therapy care improve with chiropractic adjustments. (Injury, 1996)

Why are we not being sent to the chiropractor first? Research from the Injury Journal says that chiropractors can give relief where physical therapy and medicine has failed, again I ask why are we not seeking chiropractic care verses other health care choices?

Taking the correct drug for the correct diagnoses in the correct dose will kill about 106,000 Americans per year, making it the 4 th most common cause of death in the US. (Journal of the American Medical Association, 1998)

WOW! Think, ask questions and ask more questions, before you blindly take that next prescription.Be sure your doctor knows your history, your current drugs, your allergies and any other drugs over the counter you are taking currently.Ask is there other choices; herbs, natural supplements, other types of life style changes, exercise ,other health care practitioners etc., Most important is for you to be a informed patient and you do your homework! Do not go about your health care needs blindly, you are not sheep. Be informed!

Non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs for rheumatoid and/or osteoarthritis conservatively cause 16,500 Americans to bleed to death each year, making that the 15most common cause of death in the US. (New England Journal of Medicine, 1999)

Do you know you can drastically affect RA (rheumatoid arthritis) - symptoms with diet and life style changes?
Check it out it is a better starting place than the drugs treatment. Diet changes will not have the same risks as the drug treatments have. This is non traditional treatment but I have seen much success with food elimination with patients with inflammatory conditions. I place patients on a non-inflammatory diet, the changes are amazing!

Glutamate and aspartame can cause chronic pain sensitization, and removing them from the diet for 4 consecutive months can eliminate all chronic pain symptoms. (Annals of Pharmacotherapy, 2002)

Why eat this stuff if you have chronic pain and if you do not why risk it! Away with all artificial sweeteners and artificial preservatives!
List of Glutimine foods -Not conclusive list-ranch dressings,Parmesan cheese,gravy,dipping sauces,chicken and sausage prepared foods,cheese products,soy sauce,MSG,Caesar salads,canned soups,Boar Head meats,Accent- food spice,Bouillon cubes to name a few.

Chiropractic spinal adjusting has been shown to be better than 5 times more effective than the NSAIDs pain drugs Celebrex and Vioxx in the treatment of chronic neck and low back pain. (Spine, 2003)

If this is you go out and find yourself a chiropractor, choose one who also has a nutritional background. Food and supplements are a great resource to aid in decreasing your joint pains.

In patients suffering from chronic pain subsequent to degenerative spinal disease, 59% can eliminate the need for pain drugs by consuming adequate levels of omega-3 essential fatty acids. (Surgical Neurology, 2006)

Remember to get a good source of Omega 3 not a cheap supplements, you do pay for what you get. Caution only Omega 3's avoid the 6 and 9's, we get more than we need form our diets.

Chiropractic adjustments have been shown to significantly lower blood pressure. (Journal of Human Hypertension, 2007)

Try a new approach and work with your chiropractor and change your diet/ life style. Add in some exercise, once cleared to exercise. You may be able to eliminate medications. Be sure your chiropractor is aware of your hypertension situation before you begin your care.

The estimated incidence of chronic pain from whiplash trauma is 15-40%. (Jour. of the Am Academy of Ortho Surg, 2007)

Why not start immediate care with the chiropractor to give yourself the best opportunity for a full recovery instead of waiting till your condition is chronic. Refer back to the prior Spine 1994 article.

Meniere’s Disease has been linked to a disorder of the upper cervical spine facet joints. (International Tinnitus Jour, 2007)

Adjusting the facets may be the solution to your Menires's Disorder (ringing in the ears)

Supplementing with vitamin D3 has the potential to reduce cancer deaths in America by 75%. (Ann of Epidemiology, 2009)

This research suggests such a reduction in cancer death rates that we all should be taking it daily-that's about 2/3 the risk of cancer just wiped away with one simple supplement. Remember Vitamin D3 is a fat soluble vitamin and you should be tested and told what amounts you need and monitor your amounts on a every 3mo test via blood if you are low and supplementing. We all want that easy cure pill here you go Vitamin D3 it is a start to decreasing your cancer risk. It could be considered a life assurance policy.

Potentially, the largest exposure of Americans to the neurotoxin mercury is through the consumption of products containing High Fructose Corn Syrup. (Environmental Health, 2009)

Why would you knowingly want to ingest mercury? Give up what you know to be bad for you and eat better. Remember knowledge is power and this is why I am sharing this information with you..

Those who consumed the highest amounts of non steroidal anti-inflammatory pain drugs increased their risk of dementia, including Alzheimer’s dementia, by 66%. (Neurology, 2009)

Try something else diet and supplements, fish oil- omega 3's only ,Boswellia and other non inflammatory supplements without the side effects of loosing your mind.

The newest estimate for the incidence of autism is 1 in 91 US children. (Pediatrics, 2009)

Lots of issues with this first know what you are doing to your kids ask questions, read about immunizations and avoid the Tylenol for children after immunization if you do choose this route. Remember to be informed children are not little people they are different they are not done growing.

Did You Know?

Thought this would be great information trivia about chiropractic!

Did You Know…?

 That you cannot adjust yourself?

“Cracking” or “popping” your spine may give temporary relief but since you are not correcting the cause of the problem, the urge to pop or crack comes back. You may be causing more problems than by doing nothing at all!

 That you cannot tell when you need to be adjusted?

Even chiropractors need to be checked by other chiropractors! The condition that we look for is like a cavity in your teeth—it may be there for some time before you feel anything.

 That after going through the birth process, babies’ little systems can have interference already?

Many parents of infants who have received chiropractic care have reported their child sleeping well, colic disappearing, asthma symptoms resolved, regular elimination…..many results that they have had no success with otherwise.

 That you cannot “get addicted” to getting adjusted?

Are you addicted to exercise or brushing your teeth? What happens for most people is that they get used to feeling in balance, less stressed and having more
energy. You may become more aware of what works and doesn’t work for your body.

 That you can stop anytime?

Your lifestyle stress will continue to build up in your body and you may experience a health crisis. Once you have been under care and realize how well you can function-most of our patients choose a wellness program to have those benefits for a lifetime!

 That chiropractic is different from massage?

Chiropractic deals primarily with the nervous system, spine and meningeal tissue.

Massage therapists deal with muscles and lymphatic drainage.

 That Chiropractic care is extremely safe?

Our malpractice insurance costs us a FRACTION of a Medical Doctor, orthopedist or neurosurgeon. As you know, rates are based on claims- think of your auto policy – more accidents, your rates go up! No accidents – better premiums.

 That you can go to a chiropractor even if you have a medical doctor?

Yes! No matter what kind of healthcare you choose, chiropractic care does something unique that no other profession does! In fact, many medical doctors themselves are under chiropractic care.

 That Chiropractor’s do not use medicine or surgery?

There are definitely times and places where emergency medical care is needed. We should not forget that proper lifestyle management is PARAMOUNT to the optimal functioning of the body and that if we choose to live consciously and healthfully that less medical care will be needed.

 That even if you “feel fine” you should see a chiropractor?

Many different conditions exist before you feel them! A cavity in your tooth is a perfect example of this. Heart disease, cancer and diabetes take YEARS to develop- mostly with no symptoms! Subluxation is another of those conditions that degrade your function over time sometimes with very few symptoms. Why not check your nervous system just as you would go to your dentist for a check up!

 That your frequency of adjustment may be different than someone else?

Everyone will need different care because we all have different life stresses. We never recommend any less care for you than we would give to our own families. The technology we use allows us to remove the guesswork and give you exactly the amount of care you need to remove subluxations and prevent the degradation of your nervous system.

Let us help you if you or your loved ones have not had a spinal screening please drop in and we can help you make a informed health care decision.

Weight Loss and Why it is Diffucult for Some

Why do so many people have food issues, and difficulty loosing weight?Over the next few weeks I will be looking at the complex issues associated with weight loss as well as other weight related issues. Food addictions and anorexia, bulimia and food allergies are just some of the issues we will be addressing.

These issues are a growing part of our society. We now have people on national TV sharing there weight loss issues as a game ... Who can loss the most. We need to look first at the total issue and not just the food issues.

Over the many years of working with patients with eating disorders and weight issues I found that there is no easy solutions. You must work with the brain as well as the diet and body. It is not a lack of exercise or eating the wrong foods, it is a more complex issue. The answer is once you fix the cause you are well on your way to a healthier person and a healthier you with a solution to a life long issue.

Most American Dieters have a loss of at least 3 primary essential nutrients. This has been know since as far back as 1965.

Common lost or deficient nutrients are : Vitamin A ,C and B6,secondary supplement losses are riboflavin, folic acid ,calcium, iron, magnesium, zinc, copper, manganese, chromium.

Primary reasons for diet failures are we consider it a diet and not a lifestyle change. We address alcoholic and drug addicts as having a chemical imbalance but not those who have eating disorders. If we start to connect the brain issues and the chemical imbalances as part of the solution we will have more success.

First Lets Address eating Disorders as a 12 Step Program

Incorporating the ideas that the 12 step programs have been successfully using for drug and alcohol recover into food addictions programs we will have more success see life style changes.

8 Steps to Recover:

1.Correct the brain chemistry imbalances-which can cause anxiety, depression, and emotional eating.

2.End Low Caloric Diets- These diets result in poor eating habits, mood swings, energy poor, weigh gain by depleting the brain and body of proper nutrition.

3.Balance Unstable Blood Sugars it causes moodiness, sweet cravings and starch cravings. The recommendation I will present are not a form of treatment, nor diagnosis nor are they recommended for self treatment, just education.

This blog entry will be in a series over several weeks.

The first thing is to identity your issues. Are you a binge eater, a anorexic or a bulimic or a over eater or some one who think you may be on the way to one of these issues.
Start by looking down the family tree, look at what issues other family members have. Mother, father, siblings, grandparents, aunts and uncles. This will be a great place to start. Much of our health issues are derived from our family/genetics and learned behaviors and mental health status.

Ask a lot of family history question if you can and know how they treated there condition. Was it Prozac or muscle relaxants drug use or alcohol, what ever, write it down. These issues can come out sideways for many of us.

Keep a honest journal of all your health issues the journal every single thing that goes into your mouth for the next 4 weeks , do not change these habits just write them down. Reason, it will help you determine what your issue are ex.sugar cravings, alcohol, carbohydrate craving, poor protein consumption ...
We can really have a better plan once you know where the problem lye's.

After for weeks you need to get a calorie book and count up the number of calories you get in a day and what are the sources of those calories. This will surprise you where you derive your primary calories from in a day and from what food sources.

Keep following for more ideas on healthy weight loss.

Next post will be on mental health and simple things to help your mental status!

Joint pain, arthritis pain, could it be my diet?

Readers,
It's getting colder and winter is on her way! If you are one of the many
joint pain sufferers you may have already have noticed a increase in your joint pains.

Research has made a direct link to pain and diet. We should all know that "Junk Food" is off the list.

Processed sugars and other high-glycemic starches increase inflammation, as they raise blood sugar, according to an article in the March 2002 American Journal of Clinical Nutrition

Chronic inflammation almost always is connected with diabetes and excess weight. You can't see or feel inflammation, but this type of inflammation increases the risk of coronary heart disease, the leading cause of death among people with diabetes. Cancers and coronary diseases are also on the rise.
Good News!

I have 11 foods that will be greatly beneficial in reducing your joint pain and decreasing the inflammatory process

Here are several simple food practices that you can add to your diet in support of better vascular health.

1.Salmon and cold water fish, contain anti-inflammatory fats called omega-3s. Wild salmon has more of these super-healthy fats than does farmed salmon. Farm raised fish is more toxic. Fish raised in a fish farm is mostly corn fed which will also increase your joint pain.

2.Grass-fed beef and other animal foods are your best sources of meat products. As opposed to traditional grain-fed livestock, meat that comes from grass fed animals also contains anti-inflammatory omega-3s but in lower concentrations than cold water fish. Free-range livestock that graze in pastures build up higher levels of omega-
3's. Meat from grain-fed animals has virtually no omega-3s and plenty of saturated fat. Remember, to choose organic meat. We do not want meat with antibiotics and other medications.

Cooking tip: Unless it's ground, grass-fed beef may be tougher, so cook it slowly for best results.

3.Salads, made with dark-green lettuce, spinach, and veggies that are rich in vitamin C, other antioxidants and nutrients dampen inflammation.
Choose olive oil-and-vinegar for your salad dressing (vinegar helps moderate blood sugar). Skip the croutons! Grains are pro-inflammatory foods.

4.Cruciferous vegetables include broccoli, cauliflower, brussels sprouts and kale. They are loaded with antioxidants. They provide one other ingredient, sulfur what the body needs to make its own high-powered antioxidants.

5.Cherries another great food. A study in the April 2006 Journal of Nutrition showed that eating cherries daily can significantly reduce inflammation. Cherries are packed with antioxidants and relatively low on the glycemic index. Be sure to eat only organic cherries.

Tip: Frozen cherries are available all year long and make a tasty dessert with a little plain yogurt or cheese.

6. Blueberries are delicious fruits. They are packed full of natural compounds that reduce inflammation. Researchers think that blueberries may protect the brain from many of the effects of aging. Frozen berries are usually less expensive than fresh and just as good for you. Remember buy organic because you do not need the pesticides!

7. Turmeric spice contains a powerful, natural anti-inflammatory compound. According to a report in the August 2007 Biochemical Pharmacology, Turmeric is part of curry spice blends which is used in Asian cuisines. To use: Buy powdered curry spice which contains turmeric or plain curry spice and use it as a seasoning.
Experiment with it in squash and pumpkin soups.

8. Ginger is a relative of tumeric, and it is also known for its anti-inflammatory properties. Some research suggests that it might also help control blood sugar.
Add ginger to your diet in the form of raw ginger or as a tea. Brew your own ginger tea.

Remove the skin of a fresh ginger root from the super market using a peeler. Add several thin slices to a cup of hot water and let steep for a 3-5 minutes. Drink warm or chilled, it is nice with lemon or orange rind.

9. Garlic, the verdict is still out on this one. The research isn't consistent, but garlic is said to have some anti-inflammatory and glucose-regulating benefits, and it may also help your body fight infections. It won't hurt you, and it makes for a tasty addition to foods.

10. Green tea contains natural anti-inflammatory compounds as does fruits and vegetables. It may even reduce the risk of heart disease and cancer.

Recommendation is one cup a day, brew it like sun tea, refrigerate, and serve. Keeps about 3 days in the refrigerator.

11.Olive oil is a great source of oleic acid, another anti-inflammatory oil. Researchers wrote in the October 2007 Journal of the American College of Nutrition that those who consume more oleic acid have better insulin function and lower blood sugar.

Shopping Guide: Choose extra-virgin olive oil, which is the least processed, and use it instead of other cooking oils. Other "cold-pressed" or "expeller-pressed" oils can be good sources as well, but some oils cause imflammation such as sunflower and soy oils.

As you noticed, anti-inflammatory eating is right in line with healthy lifestyle and diabetic friendly diets. This is the way we all should eat, whether we have disease or not. It is easier to be well than to get well once you have a disease. Seek to add lots of plant foods and eliminate or limit animal foods, as unaltered and unprocessed as possible. If everyone ate this way, we would be living Life Long Health and Wellness.
Please contact me if you need further help with an antiimflammatory diet.

Till next time,

Dr. Kulp

Why Vitamin D

Did you know vitamin D is known as the "Miracle Medicine", it has been known to reduce cancer rates by 77%.

How do you know if you need Vitamin D first you need to start with a base line blood test to determine you levels. Normal is 20 -80 ng/DL. Ideally you want to be as close to 80 as possible or above 60ng/DL.Less than #0 ng/DL are considered deficient

If you need a blood test call and we can write one for you or go to Any Lab Test Now and order your own test.

Lower than normal levels can put you at a increased risk for breast ,colon cancer, leukemia, and melanoma. Reason why is that Vit D inhibits angiogenesis, the growth of new blood vessels that permit the spread of cancer cells through the body.

Great sources of Vitamin D form foods:
Cheese,butter,cream,fortified milks,fish,oysters,Fortified cereals.

15-20 min 3 times per week exercise in the sun such as a walk gives you Vit D as well, caution if it is overcast or cloudy you will not get you Vit D.

Caution if a little is good is a lot better NO! To much can cause you to pull calcium from your bones and depositing it in the blood and then it will end up in the heart and lung tissues thus reducing there function.

Remember the simple steps

1.Get the blood test done
2.Read the results/consult with Chiropractor or MD
3.Add Good source Vit D and increase food source of Vit D if less than Normal
4.Exercise in the outdoors 3 times per week

What foods cause pains? The best sources of omega-3 Fatty acids: fish, fish oil, wild game,grass-fed animals, green vegetables, flax seeds, chia seeds.

Researchers from Harvard University indicate that a large proportion of the general population is at increased risk for developing chronic inflammatory disease, in part due to inadequate nutrient intake.

Make healthier food choices to aid in decreasing your joint pains. Eat more Omega 3 foods. If you can't get enough Omega 3 foods then try our new lemon flavored Omega 3 formula, great taste in a easy to assimilate form.

80 % of American children and adolescents and 70% of adults do not eat five vegetable and fruit servings a day (3 vegetables, 2 fruits).

One source that shares how deficient our food choices are. A great reason to support taking a daily multiple vitamin. Use caution with "Cheap vitamins", what is the source and is it safe? What country are your raw ingrediences coming from? Is the source organic or you taking a pesticide laden vitamin supplements? Palmer'/>
Answer to birthday Question!

It is the birthday of chiropractic!
We as a profession have been caring for patients since 1895. Dr. D.D. Palmer was the first doctor of chiropractic. He gave the first adjustment to Mr. Harvey Lillard! The greatest news was Harvey regained his hearing after that adjustment. He was deaf since his younger years. Dr.Palmer first thought he found the cure for deafness. Not so, but many people who had nerve interference had regained thier hearing.Others did not they had other issues.
We found that the power that created the body is the power that heals the body .We can heal and change many conditions through chiropractic care. The reason is that when the spine has a subluxation(misalignment)it affects the nervous system. So, if a nerve is not functioning properly then the body is not working at it's optimal level. To keep your the body at a optimal health be sure to be checked regularly for spinal subluxation . Learn more about the simple things you can do to add years to your life. I listened to a CD today that said no one can change there genetics as of yet. Each of us are programmed on how long we will live, but we can change the quality of our lives by choosing health and this may add years to your life. Check back for more tips.
Live long and healthy!

Dr. Kulp

September Birthday

Please Join us on Tuesday,September 8th to learn more about who D.D.
