Fact #1


Catechins, a family of polyphenols found in green tea, may help protect the eyes against glaucoma and other eye related diseases, according to recent research. The green tea compounds can travel from the digestive system into the tissues of the eyes.


Researchers analyzed eye tissue from rats that drank green tea and found that the lens, retina and other tissues absorbed significant amounts of the catechins. Catechins act as powerful antioxidants that protect sensitive eye tissue from oxidative damage which can be caused by UV radiation and other sources.

Fact #2

Older mice, mice that are known to have decreased immune function, were supplemented with vitamin E and demonstrated increased formation of T cells, a type of white blood cell called a lymphocyte which plays a major role in cell mediated immunity.


Long term Vitamin E use was also found to decrease the risk of contacting chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) in both smokers and non-smokers, according to the latest research.

Fact #3

Certain women with a familial history of breast cancer that also have a specific mutation of the BRCA1 gene have demonstrated an increased risk in also developing ovarian cancer.
The BRCA1 gene is a tumor suppressor gene that when damaged or mutated can significantly increase the risk of developing breast cancer.

Children with celiac disease have been found to have lower than normal levels of tryptophan and other associated amino acid precursors. These deficiencies can then lead to higher rates of depression and behavioral disorders. It was found in a recent study, that those children with celiac disease who complied with a gluten free diet experienced a decrease in the severity and frequency of depression and associated psychiatric behaviors.

Women who consume a diet high in trans-fats have a significantly increased risk of developing endometriosis. This is in comparison to those women who consume a diet rich in omega-3 fatty acids, the type found in fish and flax seed. These women are found to have a significantly reduced risk of developing endometriosis.

Endometriosis is a pelvic inflammatory condition in which tissue similar to the lining of the uterus is formed elsewhere in the body. Endometriosis can cause scar tissue and adhesions that can then lead to debilitating pain.

Heavy Purses and Wallets Why Do You Need To Ditch It

Do you suffer from low back and neck pain?

Today's large, heavy purses and trendy handbags keep getting bigger and bigger.

How do these bags make your neck and back feel? Pain, soreness? How does a bag cause joint pain, neck pain or back pain?

Are you getting more headaches than you have in the past?

Lets look at your purse.

Most woman with large bags can fill them to the top. Ask her," What is in the bag, are these items she can not do without! Most of these things we can live without for the few hours till we return home.

Lugging around these heavy bags ,typically weighing 10-16 pounds or more - can often be the primary cause of your upper back problems.

The pain is not always present while you are carrying the bag. This makes your pain a mystery with no known cause or correlation to your symptoms. The pain can show up as later even a day alter.

Men you are not out of the woods either !

Gentlemen you to have issues carrying your large wallets in your rear pocket.
The days of the big fat leather wallets, loaded with plastic sheathed photos of family and credit cards need to come to a end.

Lighten your wallet and decrease your sciatica symptoms. If you want pictures of the kids and wife put them in your phone your are more likely to view them more frequently then when in your wallet.

Carrying a wallet in your back pocket can cause low back pain, leg pain and hip pains.

Make changes

Start by changing what is in the wallet-cut out picture and down load them
onto your phone.

Take out unnecessary credit card

Avoid the speciality card and keep them on a key ring

Carry you wallet in your front pocket to avoid the low back pain.This may prevent a pickpocket from picking your wallet.

A great idea is to totally give up a wallet and us a money clip.

The American Chiropractic Association recommends that handbags weigh no more than 10 percent of the owner's body weight, but doctors point out that the rule was made assuming the weight would carried distributed evenly across your back, like when wearing a backpack.When the bag weighs more than 10% it can begin to cause a serious injury compressing on the nerves coming from the neck area.
A common purse load can weigh -- roughly the equivalent weight of two newborns.



If you weigh 150 lbs then your bag should not weigh more than 7.5 lbs. and this should be carried equally on each side 3.25 lbs per shoulder

Wearing a strap over one shoulder should generally weigh less than 10 percent of your body weight to avoid injury. Remember to switch the sides you're carrying it on often, and walk using correct posture.Keeping your head and shoulders aligned and upright.

Women if you are carrying around a fashionable heavy handbag you could be setting yourself up for a unintended destination of neck and shoulder pains.



What Happens?

Carrying a heavy load on one side of your body every day can lead to compression through the spine, when carrying a bag for more than three minutes, it cause a lengthening of tissues, a phenomenon known as tissue creep.

This can restrict and compress the spinal joints, which then leads to numbness and tingling in the hands, lengthening and imbalance in the muscles in the shoulder and back, headaches, arm pain, shoulder pain. This is what leads to the pain we later feel.

Another problem is when a woman is wearing high heels while carrying a heavy bag. This can cause back pain into the mix by shifting the load further forward and moving the neck compression down into the lumbar spine. Check not just your bag, but also your shoes!

The best way to carry a heavy load is in a back pack be sure to use both straps and carry the load over both shoulders equally.

The two-shouldered bag is not likely to spark a new fashion trend. It will prevent injury that can become chronic... You choose fashion or chronic pain issues!

Avoid the trap of the vanity issues and put your spine in first place above vanity.

The ideal purse- is one with a wide strap that keeps the load close to your body.

The best choice is a back pack, 2ND best is your messengers bag that is worn over the shoulder. Straps that are worn over the shoulder help keep the weight close to the body and disperse the load more equally.

How to Buy a New Purse

• Purchase a purse with short, wide straps- this keeps the load close to your
body
. Straps that run across the body/ chest are ideal for distributing the load.
• Clean out your purse regularly to keep the load light.
• Set your purse down whenever you get the chance.
• If you must do carry a heavy bag, such as a computer bag, switch
shoulders often.
• Consider dividing your heavy load between two bags.

***My best advice is that if you must carry everything for everyone take your last or a old purse. Purchase a small ideal bag with wide straps and put only in it what you need. Be sure the small bag has only the necessary things. In the older larger bag put everything else and store this bag in the trunk of your car. This way you will never feel like you are without all the stuff you will need someday. Remember you can also store stuff in the glove box.


Lets start lightening up your bags and see if you don't see less neck and low back pain.

Seeds What You Need to Know

Did you know the seed industry changed drastically in recent years?

About 7 million people had backyard gardens and became food growers last year.

Seeds are where our gardens develop from, then they grow into our food which
eventually ends up on our kitchen table.

Did you know that in 1980 a Supreme Court ruling was made that approved patents on life forms by genetic coding. This means seeds are legally traded and owned as commodities.

Three decades later, three multinationals, Monsanto, DuPont, and Syngenta,control 47 percent of the first link in the food chain, and 10 companies own 67 percent.

Why Care? Who Cares? You should!

“Transgenic technologies”, these are modifications happening to our food sources through changing the natural seeds. This can include breeding plants to produce pharmaceuticals, other crops are produced to resist pesticides and herbicides.

Since we allowed patenting of plant genetics, seeds have become a attractive investment- a new source to capitalize on.

Seed saving is how seeds were stored for thousands of years. Now we are seeing restrictions being placed on seeds by these few companies and we may be looking at becoming a hostage, our food supply is now at the hands of these few monopoly companies. These companies will control what is planted and how much is planted in the future.

Do you want these adulterated food sources?

This has the risk of causing genetic diversity to be lost. Now run by monopoly corporations diversity will shrink, seed conservation efforts will dwindle, we will loose genetic diversity all through these processes.

What can we do?

Start by knowing what goes on with your food. Ask questions where you purchase your foods from, ask the garden center the source of the seeds.
Seek out companies who sell organic seeds, support organic companies, eat organic as much as possible for your health.

More Did You Know

As I was deciding on today's topic I came across Dr.Dan Murphy's works. Dr. Murphy is a leader in chiropractic research. I found a synopsis of some of the most recent medical journal articles that Dr.Murphy pulled together, this is information we should all be made aware of. The sad thing is that this is published information, but it is not reaching you -- the general public.

That almost sounds like it should be written on the label of all the Tylenol bottles.Looks Like a serious warning should have been sent out for all of us to know this!

Non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs for rheumatoid and/or osteoarthritis conservatively cause 16,500 Americans to bleed to death each year, making that the 15most common cause of death in the US. (New England Journal of Medicine, 1999)

Do you know you can drastically affect RA (rheumatoid arthritis) - symptoms with diet and life style changes?
Check it out it is a better starting place than the drugs treatment. Diet changes will not have the same risks as the drug treatments have. This is non traditional treatment but I have seen much success with food elimination with patients with inflammatory conditions. I place patients on a non-inflammatory diet,the changes are amazing!


Glutamate and aspartame can cause chronic pain sensitization, and removing them from the diet for 4 consecutive months can eliminate all chronic pain symptoms. (Annals of Pharmacotherapy, 2002)


Why eat this stuff if you have chronic pain and if you do not why risk it! Away with all artificial sweeteners and artificial preservatives!

Try a new approach and work with your chiropractor and change your diet/ life style. Add in some exercise, once cleared to exercise. You may be able to eliminate medications. Be sure your chiropractor is aware of your hypertension situation before you begin your care.

Why not start immediate care with the chiropractor to give yourself the best opportunity for a full recovery instead of waiting till your condition is chronic. Refer back to the prior Spine 1994 article.

Remember Vitamin D3 is a fat soluble vitamin and you should be tested and told what amounts you need and monitor your amounts on a every 3mo test via blood if you are low and supplementing. We all want that easy cure pill here you go Vitamin D3 it is a start to decreasing your cancer risk. It could be considered a life assurance policy.

Potentially, the largest exposure of Americans to the neurotoxin mercury is through the consumption of products containing High Fructose Corn Syrup. (Environmental Health, 2009)

Why would you knowingly want to ingest mercury? Give up what you know to be bad for you and eat better. Remember knowledge is power and this is why I am sharing this information with you..

Those who consumed the highest amounts of non steroidal anti-inflammatory pain drugs increased their risk of dementia, including Alzheimer’s dementia, by 66%. (Neurology, 2009)

Try something else diet and supplements, fish oil- omega 3's only ,Boswellia and other non inflammatory supplements without the side effects of loosing your mind.

The newest estimate for the incidence of autism is 1 in 91 US children. (Pediatrics, 2009)

Lots of issues with this first know what you are doing to your kids ask questions, read about immunizations and avoid the Tylenol for children after immunization if you do choose this route. Remember to be informed children are not little people they are different they are not done growing.

Weight Loss and Why it is Diffucult for Some

Why do so many people have food issues, and difficulty loosing weight?Over the next few weeks I will be looking at the complex issues associated with weight loss as well as other weight related issues. Food addictions and anorexia, bulimia and food allergies are just some of the issues we will be addressing.

These issues are a growing part of our society. We now have people on national TV sharing there weight loss issues as a game ... Who can loss the most. We need to look first at the total issue and not just the food issues.

Over the many years of working with patients with eating disorders and weight issues I found that there is no easy solutions. You must work with the brain as well as the diet and body. It is not a lack of exercise or eating the wrong foods, it is a more complex issue. The answer is once you fix the cause you are well on your way to a healthier person and a healthier you with a solution to a life long issue.

Most American Dieters have a loss of at least 3 primary essential nutrients. This has been know since as far back as 1965.

Common lost or deficient nutrients are : Vitamin A ,C and B6,secondary supplement losses are riboflavin, folic acid ,calcium, iron,magnesium,zinc,copper,manganese,chromium.

Primary reasons for diet failures are we consider it a diet and not a lifestyle change. We address alcoholic and drug addicts as having a chemical imbalance but not those who have eating disorders. If we start to connect the brain issues and the chemical imbalances as part of the solution we will have more success.

First Lets Address eating Disorders as a 12 Step Program

Incorporating the ideas that the 12 step programs have been successfully using for drug and alcohol recover into food addictions programs we will have more success see life style changes.

8 Steps to Recover:

1.Correct the brain chemistry imbalances-which can cause anxiety, depression, and emotional eating.

2.End Low Caloric Diets- These diets result in poor eating habits, mood swings, energy poor, weigh gain by depleting the brain and body of proper nutrition.

3.Balance Unstable Blood Sugars it causes moodiness, sweet cravings and starch cravings. Over time this causes adrenal exhaustion.

4.Low Thyroid Function- Common causes of weight and energy problems.

5.Food Addictions need to be over come - Allergy addictions can trigger powerful cravings as well as headaches, congestion and constipation.

6.Hormone Havoc needs to identified and resolved, causes can be cramping, weight gain, PMS and menopausal symptoms.

7.Stop yeast over growth- trigger by antibiotic use, cortisone's,can cause bloating, and powerful craving for sweets and starches.

8.Correct fatty acid deficiencies which will cause cravings for rich fatty foods.


Create Goals:



1.Stop all food cravings
2.Identify and remove all eating disorders
3.Eliminate mood swings
4.Remove negative obsessions about your body

This is a big order to create all these changes. Most of us can not do such a under taking by ourselves. The plan I will unfold is meant to be guidelines and not a treatment plans. I will be willing to work with you in office if these are your issues. The recommendation I will present are not a form of treatment, nor diagnosis nor are they recommended for self treatment, just education.

This blog entry will be in a series over several weeks.

The first thing is to identity your issues. Are you a binge eater, a anorexic or a bulimic or a over eater or some one who think you may be on the way to one of these issues.
Start by looking down the family tree, look at what issues other family members have. Mother, father, siblings, grandparents, aunts and uncles. This will be a great place to start. Much of our health issues are derived from our family/genetics and learned behaviors and mental health status.

Ask a lot of family history question if you can and know how they treated there condition. Was it Prozac or muscle relaxants drug use or alcohol, what ever,write it down. These issues can come out sideways for many of us.

Keep a honest journal of all your health issues the journal every single thing that goes into your mouth for the next 4 weeks , do not change these habits just write them down. Reason, it will help you determine what your issue are ex.sugar cravings, alcohol,carbohydrate craving, poor protein consumption ...
We can really have a better plan once you know where the problem lye's.

After for weeks you need to get a calorie book and count up the number of calories you get in a day and what are the sources of those calories. This will surprise you where you derive your primary calories from in a day and from what food sources.
